Basic FATE Course

UTHealth Houston’s activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and utilize the knobology of the ultrasound machine in order to optimize ultrasound imaging.
  • Obtain and identify TTE images using each of the four FATE views (subcostal 4-chamber, apical 4-chamber, parasternal short axis, parasternal long axis) as well as interpret pleural images on both sides of the thorax.
  • Perform a complete FATE exam (including all 4 views and pleural scanning) within a limited timeframe to mimic real-life practice and interpret the resulting images.
  • Identify the subcostal inferior vena cava (IVC) view as well as interpret the findings to assess for volume status and/or volume responsiveness.
  • Obtain the IVC view and assess volume status within a limited timeframe to mimic real life practice and interpret the resulting images.
  • Recognize normal cardiac and pulmonary images versus pathology in an acutely ill patient.
  • Interpret cardiac function (normal vs abnormal) using mitral septal separation (MSS), fractional shortening (FS), and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE).
