Congratulations to Dr. Yafen Liang for receiving the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesia (SCA) Mid-Career Award! This award will support $100k over 2-year period and will start on July 1, 2022.
The SCA offers a number of funding opportunities to facilitate access to the best research and career development resources for cardiovascular and thoracic physicians in mid-career, both from the United States and abroad. These grants/awards are meant to support research that will enhance the quality of care and life for patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic procedures, and advance the careers of SCA members through leadership opportunities. This is a very competitive award and only gives out to one awardee each year!
Dr. Liang was first recruited to the UTHealth as the Director of Advanced Heart Failure Anesthesiology in 2018. Over the last 3 years, she has emerged as a prominent leader of the Heart Vascular Institute and within the Department. She is currently the Division Chief of Cardiovascular Anesthesia and the Vice Chair of Clinical Research. In addition, she serves as the Chair for Diversity , Equality and Inclusion Committee at the SCA.
Her research interest focuses on perioperative organ injury. The proposed study is the direct translation of sound mechanistic pathway discovery in animal models to clinical application and development of novel preventive strategies of perioperative acute kidney injury using the drug esomeprazole. If proven to be effective, this study could be easily implemented in clinical practice and serve as an effective treatment for perioperative AKI. This trial will pave our pathway to future large-scale trials and further funding opportunities!
