The Texas Ultrasound Extravaganza was hosted by the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine; and was chaired by Dr. Nadia Hernandez. The conference consisted of 6 ultrasound workshops using flipped-classroom learning and was attended by several UT Houston anesthesiology faculty, fellows, residents and medical students.
The weekend started off with a Grand Rounds lecture given by the world-renowned Dr. Ed Mariano, who also served as an instructor for the weekend. This was our the 7th year UT Houston held the Basic FATE course, which was directed by Dr. Sana Khan. It was also the first time holding an advanced FATE course, director by Dr. Sudipta Sen. Instructors from all over the country came in for the conference, as well as the creator of the FATE protocol, and his diastology expert from Denmark. This course has inspired the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine to hold Advanced POCUS Courses. Keep a look out for these courses in the future.
The second ASA Diagnostic POCUS Part IV workshop was led by members of the ASA POCUS Board. This workshop allowed participants an opportunity to complete their ASA Diagnostic POCUS Certificate. Three ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia workshops were held which used cadavers, pediatric and adult live-models and simulations. The pediatric course was directed by the creator of www.baby-blocks.com, Dr. John Hagen and had faculty from every major Children’s hospital in the US and Canada. The Basic Regional Anesthesia course was directed by a UT RAPM Fellowship graduate, Dr. Xuan Langridge and Dr. John Alexander from UT Southwestern using local RAPM experts from UT Houston, MD Anderson, UT Southwestern and private practices.
The Advanced Regional Anesthesia course was the first course ever to teach the use of ultrasound-guided percutaneous cryoneurolysis and ultrasound-guided placement of peripheral nerve stimulators for acute and persistent postoperative pain indications. Regional anesthesia and acute pain experts flew in from all over the United States to serve as instructors for the advanced regional anesthesia workshop co-directed by UT Houston anesthesiology graduate Dr. Richard Teames and Dr. Nadia Hernandez.
This rodeo themed conference held 3 networking events and definitely put Texas on the map. Over 20 UT Houston Anesthesiology Faculty and Fellows from RAPM, OB Anesthesia, Pedi Anesthesia, Critical Care, CV and Pedi CV participated in the TUE this weekend.
