Nanomedicine and BioMedical Engineering
Scholarly Concentration

  • Mission: To introduce students to the field of Nanomedicine and Biomedical Engineering and the vast opportunities it provides for enhanced therapeutics, personalized medicine, medical diagnostics, imaging, screening, prevention, regenerative medicine, and other
  • This concentration is designed to enhance the knowledge and training of medical students interested in translational and basic science research in Nanomedicine and Biomedical Engineering (nBME). Our goal is to educate and prepare medical students to learn emerging new technologies in biomedical nanotechnology and engineering through seminars, hands on tutorials, and research conducted with one or more of our inter-departmental
  • Maximum number of new students/year: 10

Year 1
Requirements

  • Apply to the program via the Scholarly Concentration website (https://med.uth.edu/oep/scholarly-concentrations-program/).
  • Upon acceptance after interviews, with the assistance of the program director(s), if needed, identify a faculty mentor and a project jointly with the mentor, define and design a core curriculum (akin to an individual development plan, https://chemidp.acs.org/)
  • Attend faculty mentor lab meetings, seminars, and/or journal clubs
  • At least 8 weeks of research

Consider applying also to the Summer Research Program (at least 8 weeks, 40 hours per week).

  • Summer – Attend nBME Scholarly Concentration Summer Seminar Series

Year 2

  • Continue with research and core curriculum
  • Attend faculty mentor lab meetings, seminars, and/or journal clubs
  • Meet regularly with faculty mentor

Summer – Attend nBME Scholarly Concentration Summer Seminar Series

Year 3

  • Continue with research and core curriculum
  • Attend faculty mentor lab meetings, seminars, and/or journal clubs as able
  • Meet regularly with faculty mentor
  • Present project at a meeting (e.g. BMES, AACR, CRS) – if mentor has funds for this

Year 4

  • Prepare publication-quality manuscript/poster
  • Submit a final written version of the research project to the mentor and program director(s) submission
  • Present final project at an appropriate venue (grand rounds, research seminar, regional/national conference, etc)
  • Consider a senior research elective rotation in an area of interest, continue to attend relevant seminars.
