Project Lead the Way

September 28, 2023

The Texas Society of Anesthesiologists is forming partnership with a program known as Project Lead the Way (PLTW), with the aims of introducing physician work to high school children interested STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. This unique partnership is one that has been piloted by the California Society of Anesthesiologist and will be as follows:

  • The Anesthesiology society will provide overall program coordination and underwrites the cost of annual teacher training
  • PLTW provides the curriculum and offers comprehensive professional development throughout the year
  • The Anesthesiology Department at a selected University coordinates classroom presentations by physicians/physician residents and hosts a field trip for each high school to the university campus.

Keeping in line with this existing paradigm, UT Houston will lead the charge in piloting this in Texas and our very own Osamudiamen Obanor, MD, has been selected as the physician coordinator (congratulations Osa). The two schools involved in this specific partnership in our community are the Harmony Science Academy High and the Harmony School of Ingenuity.

This partnership is in-line with our overarching goals as a department and institution to expand our outreach efforts into our surrounding community. Ideally these efforts at early exposure will guide budding scientists into the field of medicine and specifically the field of Anesthesiology.
