Northrup named SRNT fellow

The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco has named Thomas Northrup, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, as a member of its 2022 Fellowship class.

The status of Fellow of the SRNT is a distinction conferred by the Society on members in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of nicotine and tobacco research and of service to SRNT. Launched in 2016, nominees are judged on their research, service to the field, and service and/or demonstrated involvement in the society.

Northrup is the coordinator of behavioral science training within the Department of Family and Community Medicine and holds an appointment in the Center for Neurobehavioral Research on Addictions. His research specialties are focused on behavioral treatments for substance use disorders, secondhand and thirdhand smoke exposure prevention relating to mothers and infants in the neonatal intensive care unit, and smoking cessation.

In addition to membership with SRNT, Northrup is also a member of the American Psychological Association, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine.

Northrup received his doctorate of philosophy in clinical psychology from the University of South Carolina in 2010 before completing a residency in clinical psychology from Baylor College of Medicine. At McGovern, he teaches behavioral science to first- through third-year family medicine residents and has received multiple Dean’s Teaching Excellence Awards.
