Fifth Annual Houston Shock Symposium

The Center for Advanced Cardiopulmonary Therapies and Transplantation and UTHealth Houston Heart and Vascular will host the Fifth Annual Houston Shock Symposium, April 14-16 at Royal Sonesta Hotel Houston Galleria (2222 West Loop South).

The 2023 Houston Shock Symposium’s theme is Breaking Boundaries and will focus on the five areas of shock management:

  • Cardiac ICU
  • Cath Lab
  • Medical ICU
  • Operating Room
  • Surgical ICU

The symposium aims to have world-renowned experts in the field share and advance knowledge, expertise, and vision to save lives and reduce shock’s unacceptable high mortality rate. To contribute to this advancement, the symposium is designed for cardiologists, advanced heart failure cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, nurses, perfusionists, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and medical staff interested in the physiology, diagnosis, and management of cardiogenic shock.

The three-day event includes nine sessions featuring national and international experts in the field of cardiogenic shock. Additionally, the symposium features case and poster presentations, as well as the Training and Education in Advanced Cardiovascular Hemodynamics (TEACH) Course. The TEACH Course provides and in-depth introduction to the fundamentals of cardiovascular physiology relevant to diagnoses and therapeutics and forms the foundation for additional, advanced online courses and regional meetings.

The keynote speaker for the Fifth Annual Shock Symposium is Gregg W. Stone, MD, FACC, MSCAI, an interventional cardiologist and director of Academic Affairs for the Mount Sinai Heart Health System. Stone, professor of Population Health Sciences and Policy at Mount Sinai, has served as the national or international principal investigator for more than 140 multicenter randomized trials and studies, has authored more than 3,000 manuscripts and abstracts published in peer-reviewed literature, and has delivered thousands of invited lectures around the world.

The Houston Shock Symposium features a Skills Lab, which offers hands-on training on all aspects of mechanical circulatory support device therapies. This year, the Skills Lab will focus on:

  • Impella
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps
  • TandemLife and TandemLung
  • Large Bore Access
  • ICE + Transseptal Puncture
  • Large Bore Access Closure (Manta and Proglide)
