Addiction is a complex brain disease that affects millions of Americans with far-reaching and devastating consequences.  Scientific research over the years has advanced our understanding of the neurobiology of addiction and its treatment, using an array of effective behavioral and pharmacological interventions.  Despite significant advances, the vast majority of people in need fail to receive treatment that is based on scientific knowledge.  No other medical condition is treated this way.

The Houston Addictions Conference provides practitioners with updates on the latest advances in the epidemiology, etiology, prevention, and treatment of substance use in youth. This will be in the context of introducing clinicians to the opportunities and challenges associated with adolescent substance use, including consideration of unique neurobiological and social concerns in this age group.

The conference will feature lectures from Department of Psychiatry faculty, including Cristian Zeni, MD, PhD, associate professor; Leslie Taylor, PhD, assistant professor; Michael Weaver, MD, professor; and Cesar Soutullo, MD, professor, vice chair, and chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Additional presenters include Jeff Temple, PhD, University of Texas Medical Branch; Youngram Kim, PhD, UTHealth Houston School of Public Health; and Kevin Simon, MD, City of Boston Chief Behavioral Health Officer.
