The Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy has named Emma Stenz, MS4, as the winner of the Outstanding Student in Neuroscience Award.

Stenz matched in her area of passion, ophthalmology, and will be a resident physician at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her relocation from the Gulf Coast to the West Coast will put her in close approximation to her parents and family, which she is thankful for.

“I’m honored to have been chosen for this award and grateful to all of the professors and faculty in the UTHealth Houston Neuroscience division for their consideration,” Stenz said. “I attribute much of my knowledge foundation in the neuroscience discipline to their excellent teaching, and I am excited to apply this knowledge to my future career in ophthalmology at the University of Washington.”

Stenz said she became interested in ophthalmology while working in a retina clinic prior to medical school, where she learned about the intricate surgeries and imaging techniques employed in the field.

During medical school, she learned more about how ophthalmology would allow her to dually act as a surgeon and a clinician while capitalizing on her interests in the intersection between neuroscience and ocular pathology. Stenz is particularly interested in the vitreoretinal surgery subspecialty of ophthalmology.

In her free time, Stenz is a distance runner and pianist and enjoys cooking and skiing. She said she is very excited to do all of the above during her residency in Seattle – whenever she has time to leave the hospital.
