Physiatry students receive Outstanding Student Interest Group Award
McGovern Medical School students in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Student Association were presented the Outstanding Student Interest Group Award at the Association of Academic Physiatrists’ Physiatry ’23 National Conference Feb. 21-24 in Anaheim California.
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Student Association at McGovern Medical School is led by president Alyson Galanga, and co-vice presidents Jennifer Cheng and Jacob Urbina. The team was awarded for significant contributions made to the specialty of physiatry, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, and the rehabilitation community at large.
At the Medical School, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Student Association offers a blue book elective “Disabilities in Medicine,” as well as numerous other volunteering opportunities.
“This is an honor and joy, since even though our organization is small, and the specialty is rather small and less well known, we are still able to make great strides in our field and encourage advocacy, education, and exposure to our fellow peers here at McGovern,” Galanga said. “We are so proud of what just a few passionate, compassionate, and driven individuals can accomplish together.”
The Association of Academic Physiatrists is an organization of physiatry professionals dedicated to improving patient care by advancing the specialty through research and education. Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty that emphasizes the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of people disabled by disease, disorder, or injury.
