UTHealth Houston “Saves A Life”
Our simulation faculty recognize the importance of providing medical education to local community members.
The Save A Life series was born from the desire to spread our knowledge to individuals who may have little to no understanding of how to intervene when an out-of -hospital emergency occurs, as well as to those who may lack the confidence to provide care when placed in an emergency situation prior to the arrival of professional help.
We believe that we can incorporate simulation to teach individuals in our community small bits of health education that can truly “save a life” in brief, easy to digest, hands-on educational sessions.
Our UTHealth Emergency Medicine simulation faculty and EM residents have been teaching these sessions on campus to our McGovern Medical School students, UT graduate students, and campus faculty since 2022.
The ultimate goal is to take these sessions on the road to provide more members of the Greater Houston community the knowledge, skill, and confidence needed to step in and step up if a life threatening condition arises while with a close friend or family member, or even out at a public event with strangers.
Topics covered:
- Hands-Only CPR
- AED Use
- Anaphylaxis Recognitions and Epi-Pen Administration
- Narcan Administration for Opioid Overdose
- Basic Tourniquet Application
- Adult and Infant Choking Rescue Techniques
- Wilderness First Aid and Splinting an Injured Limb
