ED Faculty Practice
Maintaining clinical excellence in emergency medicine is a core component of the EMS Fellowship. Fellows continue to practice in the ED throughout the fellowship, ensuring they maintain expertise in their primary board certification while developing advanced skills in EMS and prehospital medicine.
At UTHealth Houston, this clinical requirement becomes an extension of the fellowship experience. EMS fellows serve as attending physicians, supervising emergency medicine residents and advanced practice providers in two of Houston’s busiest and most academically rich emergency departments: Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center & Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital.
Together, these complementary practice environments expose fellows to an exceptional breadth of pathology, patient populations, and clinical acuity. From complex tertiary referral care and high-volume trauma to the challenges of a busy county hospital, fellows gain invaluable experience while continuing to refine their skills as emergency physicians, educators, and clinical leaders.
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (external link) was the first institution established within the Texas Medical Center in 1925 and remains one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers. It is one of only two Level I trauma centers serving the more than five million residents of the Greater Houston area—and the only one with an on-site helipad.
The emergency department cares for approximately 75,000 patients annually and serves as the principal teaching site for McGovern Medical School. With more than 17,000 trauma visits each year, including over 6,000 trauma admissions, Memorial Hermann-TMC has been recognized as one of the busiest trauma centers in the United States. This exceptional volume and acuity provide fellows with unparalleled experience caring for critically ill and injured patients.
The hospital has a total capacity of 723 beds. The emergency department includes 34 treatment rooms with expandable capacity, eight dedicated trauma resuscitation bays, four medical resuscitation bays, 12 general emergency care beds, and a dedicated 10-bed pediatric emergency area.
The department is fully integrated with advanced technology, including two dedicated CT scanners located within the emergency department, a comprehensive PACS imaging system, electronic medical records with computerized physician order entry, and immediate access to Interventional Radiology, MRI, cardiac catheterization laboratories, and other advanced diagnostic and therapeutic resources.
Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital
Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (LBJ) complements the fellowship experience by providing a high-volume county hospital environment that emphasizes underserved care, complex pathology, and exceptional procedural opportunities.
With an annual emergency department census exceeding 88,000 patient visits, LBJ offers fellows extensive exposure to a diverse patient population while serving as a major teaching site for emergency medicine residents. The combination of high acuity, broad pathology, and strong educational culture makes LBJ an outstanding environment for fellows to further develop their clinical, procedural, and supervisory skills.
