Ultrasound Fellowship

Program Overview

About the Department

The Department of Emergency Medicine at UTHealth Houston is home to a nationally recognized point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) program.

Our ultrasound faculty are a highly motivated group with diverse training backgrounds. Each is an expert in core bedside applications, with additional expertise spanning advanced echocardiography, musculoskeletal sonography, pediatric ultrasound, global health applications, research, multimedia, and medical education.

We are committed to advancing the practice of clinician-performed ultrasound through research, integration into the medical school curriculum, student interest groups, and collaborative partnerships with other departments who utilize point-of-care sonography. Fellows also benefit from unique interdisciplinary collaboration, working alongside cardiology, radiology, critical care, pediatrics, and global health teams.

About the Fellowship

The fellow is actively involved in the education of Emergency Medicine residents on the ultrasound elective and partners with the fellowship director on administrative duties such as quality assurance, database management, faculty and trainee education, machine maintenance, and coordination of training courses. Fellows are also expected to lead at least 1 original research project while contributing to ongoing departmental ultrasound studies.

Graduates of the fellowship leave with a broad and adaptable scanning skill set, the confidence to assume program leadership, and the inspiration to push the limits of point-of-care ultrasound in both clinical practice and education. The fellowship benefits from the reputation and reach of one of the most recognized emergency ultrasound programs in the country.

Graduates have gone on to lead POCUS programs, contribute to national education through workshops and lectures, and publish scholarship that has shaped the field, ensuring they are prepared to advance clinical practice, research, and education at local, regional, and national levels.
