My year in the UT Houston pediatric anesthesia fellowship was genuinely a life-changing experience. Over the course of the year, I built a broad base of clinical experience and became very comfortable looking after sick and complex children. The exposure to cardiac anesthesia, NICU work, and other high-acuity cases was excellent and played a big role in shaping how I practice now.

What really stood out, though, was the working environment. It’s a supportive, relaxed, and enjoyable place to work, with people who genuinely look out for one another. I honestly enjoyed coming in each day, both for the clinical work and for the people I was working with. The pediatric anesthesia team very quickly felt like a work family, and staying on after fellowship was an easy decision for me.

The fellowship leadership is very engaged and approachable. Dr Khan was consistently supportive and open-minded, particularly when it came to individual interests and professional development. There was room to explore areas I was curious about and to shape parts of the year in a way that felt meaningful, rather than feeling locked into a rigid structure.

There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved outside the operating room, whether that’s teaching, academic work, or other projects, if that’s something you’re interested in. Fellows are encouraged to get involved at whatever level makes sense for them.

Overall, it’s a program that offers strong clinical training in a genuinely supportive environment, and one that I feel very grateful to have been part of.
